Azmar Quest - Text Based RPG

Overview

The king of Azmar is being victim of an unknown infection that is spreading across the world. You are bound to help the kingdom and defeat the evil cult that is behind this plague. By making tough choices and gearing yourself up, you’ll set out to explore this world in search of a cure. Azmar Quest is a text-based RPG that features puzzles and turn-based combat, where good choices will also (sometimes) bring fortune and glory. It is easy to play but hard to master, as the right set of skills will help you win many battles.

The main character portraits of each class have been AI generated, and the backgrounds have also been touched with AI.

Gameplay

You may choose to create an account for the game in order to play online or just play the main story in singleplayer. You can choose between the Warrior, a straightforward tanky class; the Cleric, with a good balance of offensive and healing spells; the Warlock, with powerful damage-over-time spells; or the Archer if you prefer to shoot a plethora of arrows in combat. The warrior and archer depend mainly on their gear for better performance. Any class works fine for every situation the game throws at you. This does not affect the choices you can make through the adventure and their rewards, or the amount of honor you gain.

As you start the story, you have to choose through multiple options how you are going to engage a scenario. The important choices are highlighted; they may or may not work all the time. You cannot undo your choice, so watch carefully. At the end of every combat in the game, you are given a choice to spare or finish a defeated foe, earning you honor or dishonor. Either alignment is just for flavor; it does not increase your honor income, though in some parts of the story an honorable/dishonorable hero may not succeed with every check.

The combat is also turn-based, and you get to choose if it will be instant or with logs shown on every move. You always start the combat going first. If you select an item to consume (whether a healing potion, energy drink, or a bomb), it will not end your turn. If you have more than four skills unlocked, you can change one of them for one in your reserve at no cost. Both choices can be used again on your next turn. Dragging the mouse in any direction on your character portrait will change the info it shows (buffs, debuffs, stats).

Some abilities will grant you energy, which can be used for powerful attacks, but there are also abilities with cooldowns. Every ability is affected in some way during combat; for example, a powerful ability will have its damage increased for every debuff your enemy has. Some abilities directly increase one of your stats as a buff, at the cost of dealing less damage. Finding combos is crucial to winning any match. As a warlock I use two debuffs and a cooldown, replace that cooldown for another debuff, and then use an energy ability, with the result dealing tremendous damage and healing my hero for that amount dealt.

Every combat yields experience and a bit of gold, with some choices through the adventure granting bonuses and loot boxes. Boxes must be lockpicked from the inventory, with a chance these are instant. Otherwise you will have to earn more experience to unlock them. You have to do this every time you have a box to unlock, with the more rare requiring more experience. The gear you find increases your max health by the level, with a chance they have stars. Once upgraded with gold, these stats will permanently activate as long as the gear is equipped. You may recycle unwanted gear or items for honor.

If you ever need more experience, you can grind already defeated enemies in the training section. There’s also an extra quest that yields bonus points if you have earned enough exp. There will be free rewards as you level up. You can use the gold to buy more items or boosters and the honor for more gold or boxes. If you decide to create an account, you can participate in PvP battles or co-op dungeons with the builds of other players. If you think you’ve mastered the game, you can change the difficulty to a very challenging mode, where the death of your hero means you’ll have to try tomorrow (a bit more forgiving than actual hardcore modes).

Audio & Graphics

The game should run on any PC, as it is built with Chromium (browser-based); all the images, character models, and backgrounds are decent. The music and sound effects (some classic ones like the Wilhelm scream) are cheap, but they do fit with the game at some points. To say it’s a Flash game is not far off: the UI, when clicking on any button or scrolling sideways to change the windows, behaves as such. You can even change the text fonts and combat animations.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Easy but difficult RPG, adjustable difficulty.

  • A plethora of skills to make insane builds.

  • Faster progression; grinding is not so repetitive.

Cons

  • Romantic partnerships are more rushed, frequent, and undeveloped than the main story.

  • Later quests do not tell you where to go or what to do. Mission quest logs don’t offer directions.
