Battlefield 6

About the Game

Battlefield 6, like the previous games in the series, is an epic, cinematic, and intense shooter taking place in the modern era. Its combat can at times feel like straight out of a movie, and is unlikely to leave you disappointed.

It contains:

  • A Campaign, which took around 6 hours to beat on normal difficulty, playing at a normal pace with a decent story, but might leave more to desire for those who would like to see more flushed out characters with more personality, and the story essentially being the usual West vs East, with a bit of a twist towards the end with who is behind the story events.

  • Multiplayer, which is, of course, the main attraction of the game, with plenty of different maps, both small and large, but not quite as big as 2042’s, a decent variety of weapons, which there will be more of as the game receives more updates, and 4 classes, which return from the older entries. There are, at the moment, about 8 different modes for multiplayer, but there is also the Portal, allowing for custom matchmaking

  • Redsec (Battle Royale); An intense and fun mode, bringing a ton of fun as well as frustration to the game, with some interesting mechanics, as well as some you would be familiar with if you have played Call of Duty Warzone, or other similar battle royale games. It brings missions, which grant you rewards upon completion, ranging from weapon drops, custom weapon drops, which also get dropped naturally as the match progresses, guaranteed “call-ins”, such as air strikes and artillery barrages, UAV, and Vehicle keycards, which can be an absolute terror to deal with if you aren’t appropriately geared to deal with them.

About Redsec:

As is the norm with battle royale, the zone shrinks slowly over time, but unlike in most others, hitting the border of the zone results in an instant death, rather than being able to run around on the outside of it to maybe bide your time. Running near the edge of the zone causes you to very slowly lose health over time, which makes it important to outrun it to be able to regenerate health, as you will often be fighting near said edge, meaning your health won’t regenerate if you are running while also fighting near it, while also leaving intense moments where a teammate is dragging and reviving you as you are only a meter away from the zone, as your screen is turning red and scorched from the flames.

The map is quite big and is good overall, but I would have liked to see more urban environments, as most of the map feels quite open.

There are no self-revives, meaning that if you are downed, a teammate has to pick you up, or you get sent to the respawn screen. Every match has a second chance, where you will always respawn after your first death, even if you and all your teammates die, but only for a certain duration of the match, when it gets disabled, but you can attempt to return your teammates to the fight at any point via redeploy stations, where you can revive teammates, but need to stand next to the point for around half a minute if you are by yourself, and faster if you have more teammates with you. The redeploy stations make a lot of noise tho, and are marked for all enemies on the map to see that someone is reviving, so it can be risky if there are enemies nearby, and the station can only be used once.

The same goes for certain missions, as there are some that make a lot of noise while you have to stay nearby to defend them from possible players trying to stop you. If there are nearby enemies, you can also perform counter-missions, which mark the enemies' objectives for you, allowing you to destroy them yourself and claim the rewards, or wait to try and ambush the enemies.

There is also a cool mechanic, where lootable crates can contain weapon kits, which allow you to upgrade the weapon relating to the type of kit they are, normally between weapon recoil control or mobility, magazine capacity, or scopes.

Each class has its own specialty in the mode, just like in normal Multiplayer, but what they are is changed for Redsec.

The mode overall is great fun, especially as it’s free, and don’t be deceived by negative ratings, as most of them aren’t related to gameplay, but issues like mission progressions for regular multiplayer, which I believe have been changed as of writing this review.

I would say my biggest gripe with Redsec is vehicles, more specifically, Tanks. Tanks are fun to use, and aren’t difficult to take out, but can be very unfair to face if you aren’t equipped with the right gear. When there are nearby tanks, the game spawns in Anti-Vehicle drops, which make it easier to deal with the tanks, but they are also too quick and easy to be repaired by Engineers, countered by the tanks having very limited ammo, which can be replenished on stations. As someone who has been on the delivering and receiving end of them, it’s conflicting on whether they belong in the mode or not, especially as in Quads (4-man squads), if a squad gets lucky enough with missions, they can claim up to 4 tanks for themselves, which I have come across and is a nightmare to deal with.

The mode also has some bugs, like, for example, not being able to loot items out of containers, as they have actually already been looted, but appear as if they haven’t, meaning you can’t pick them up even if you attempt to do it.

Another bug I come across often is related to destructible houses, as some of them appear to be intact, but are actually half destroyed, so what you see is a normal house, but when you enter it, you can walk through closed doors and walls, as well as fall through the floor, as the things are there visually, but not physically.

Despite these issues, the game mode is definitely recommended for everyone to try.

About Multiplayer:

The multiplayer is intense with small and big maps, as well as various modes where you can play as infantry, vehicles, or a mix of both. There aren’t a lot of maps at the moment, but there is a decent enough variety, with more to be added at a later date.

Like the usual Battlefield games, there are 4 classes as mentioned for Redsec split between Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon, each with their own specialties affecting weapons, and what they can do to support the team.

There is a nice variety of weapons, as well as types of weapons, like the usual out-of-match customization, unlike 2042, where you could mod weapons on the fly.

The destruction of environments sadly leaves much to be desired, as it isn’t nearly as much as what was promised before release, but hopefully that changes, and level-utions get added, as the game contains none at the time of the review.

Visuals

The game looks visually impressive, and runs pretty well on mid specs on a mix of medium and high graphics (RTX 3060, I9-10th gen, 32GB RAM) with practically no performance issues at any point, other than the second mission of the campaign, where the game, for some reason, runs pretty poorly.

The explosions feel cinematic, and the visual effects make the experience truly feel like the good old-fashioned Battlefield.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • A very fun free-to-play battle royale mode,

  • Good variety of weapons

  • Epic and cinematic

  • Well-designed maps

Cons

  • Lack of promised destruction

  • Not very balanced weapons

Conclusion

Overall, the game is very fun, and mostly brings what I was hoping for, outside of building destruction being lackluster compared to what was hoped for.

I definitely recommend the game for anyone who can spare the cash or wait for a sale, as it’s a game that will keep you busy for a long time.
