Loot Line Season 2

When treasure isn’t what you’re after….

After playing season 1, I was curious to see whether season 2 could improve on what came before. Luckily, it does feel like a solid step forward!

The pirate setting, larger cast, expanded storylines, relationship choices and improved animations give the sequel more to work with. The increased number of renders and animations ensures that plenty of content is present.

It isn't perfect, but season 2 feels more polished and confident than its predecessor.

About This Game

Storyline

Season 2 continues the story from the first game, so playing Season 1 beforehand is definitely recommended. You're continuing an existing journey rather than starting from scratch, and returning characters get more room to develop.

The pirate setting is probably one of the more enjoyable parts of the story. Exploring a fantasy world with your crew gives the game a nice sense of “adventure”, while the relationships between the characters add another layer to the entire journey.

The game also puts more emphasis on choices this time around. Your decisions can affect friendships, rivalries, romances and the way your crew members respond to you. I like this because it makes your role as captain feel more relevant instead of simply being a title.

There are also mysteries surrounding the protagonist's past, which give you another reason to keep progressing. The story does a decent job of keeping things moving, although I wouldn't call it deep or complicated.

For me, the story is more of a framework for the characters, choices, exploration and, well, the adult content rather than the main reason to play. It gets the job done, but it isn't going to win any awards for storytelling.

Compared with season 1, though, I think the overall storytelling is better presented. The English localisation also seems noticeably smoother, which is a welcome improvement.

Gameplay Mechanics

The gameplay remains fairly straightforward, which isn't surprising considering this is primarily a visual novel adventure.

Most of your time is spent progressing through the story, making decisions, interacting with characters and seeing how those choices affect your relationships. There isn't a complicated gameplay system hiding underneath everything, so don't come into this expecting a pirate RPG.

The choices are probably the most important gameplay element. Your decisions can influence how members of your crew perceive you, and that gives some of the interactions more weight.

I especially like the idea of having to establish yourself as a leader. You can make decisions that earn respect, or you can make questionable choices and potentially create problems for yourself.

Naturally, I may or may not have made some questionable choices. That's what save files are for, right?

The relationship system also gives you a reason to pay attention to the characters rather than simply clicking through everything to reach the next scene.

Overall, the gameplay is simple but appropriate for this type of game. It supports the story rather than trying to become something it isn't.

Visuals & Audio

This is easily one of the strongest areas of this season.

The game contains over 5000 HD renders and 250ish HD animations, and the amount of visual content is impressive. The character models are decently detailed, and the environments help give the pirate-themed fantasy world some personality.

I particularly liked the character presentation. The skin textures are fairly realistic, and some of the character proportions feel more natural than what you often see in games like this. Some poses also have a better sense of weight and gravity, although they're not perfect.

The animations are another major improvement over Season 1. They're smoother and more polished, and there are enough of them that the game doesn't feel overly dependent on static renders.

Visually, this is probably the biggest reason I would recommend season 2. There has clearly been a lot of work put into the presentation.

The audio is a different story.

The sound effects are okay, but they don't always match the quality of the visuals. The music could also use some improvement. Considering how polished some of the animations and renders are, better audio would have helped make the experience feel more complete.

So, visuals get a big thumbs up from me. The audio gets more of a "you tried" thumbs up.

Pros-

  • Clearly better than Season 1

  • Excellent visual presentation

  • Animations are particularly impressive

  • Detailed character models & attractive fantasy and pirate environments

  • Choices affect relationships

  • More developed crew interactions along with an expanded story and cast

  • Good amount of content for the price

Cons-

  • Story isn't particularly deep

  • Gameplay is fairly simple

  • Music could be better

  • Sound effects need more polish

  • Some character poses could still be improved

  • Not ideal if you're looking for complex gameplay mechanics

Conclusion

Season 2 is a noticeable improvement over Season 1. The story is decent, the choices and relationships are more interesting and the visual quality is easily the game's biggest strength.

The animations in particular are very good, while the music and sound effects are probably the areas that need the most improvement.

I wouldn't go into this expecting an amazing story or groundbreaking gameplay. But if you enjoyed Season 1 and want more of the pirate adventure with better visuals, more characters and more meaningful choices, Season 2 is definitely worth checking out. Playtime: 5-6hrs

Rating: 9/10
