MEGABONK

Updated: 1d

Overview

This is probably one of those games you can easily call a Survivors-like. Well, in Megabonk you bonk stuff, get rich, play even more, unlock cool stuff, and maybe, just maybe, touch grass. Sounds simple, right?

Ah yes, you have, like, ten minutes to deal with a lot of things that are trying to, and will, kill you. If you win, you get to play in another stage until you reach the end boss.

Gameplay

You start by picking yourself a hero. Any hero is right for the task at hand, but some are better for surviving than others. Then you select the biome and the stage you want to reach, if you won it before.

The game behaves like any other survivor-like, but it’s in three dimensions rather than two. Mobs keep coming in from all directions closer to you, and your hero will auto-attack. Collecting those crystals for experience will eventually level you up, and then you choose something out of three options. It can be a weapon or a tome upgrade, and you can refresh, skip, or banish if any of the options aren’t that helpful. Exploring the map, you can find tons of interactions, like smashing pots, activating shrines, and buying shady stuff, among many others. Some enemies are bigger because they belong to the elite and will take more guns to mow them down.

All sorts of foes may drop crazy power-ups to pick up, or even chests filled with items of random quality. This is where the gold we’ve been stocking comes into purchasing those chests. Depending on our own luck, we might get cool stuff or basic items with simpler stats. About our stats, we can improve our max health, damage, armor, speed, luck, and so on without limits. Other secondary stats are health regeneration, lifesteal, thorns, extra jumps, gold or experience point gains, or my favorite one, difficulty. If you feel like you have very good gear, you can increase the number of enemies that spawn; this in turn will increase the amount of gold and experience we get.

There is a limited time to finish a level, where you must find the boss portal and face the poor chad before you can move on or finish the scenario. Across your adventure you may collect silver, which helps you unlock stuff back at the main menu. The more you get at the start of your career, the better. Of course, you need to complete quests first, which then allows you to unlock that with silver. Or you can buy awesome skins for your heroes if you completed their quests.

The meta of every run is to get as many guns as you can, to beat down anything in your path and reach further stages, until you beat the boss. A good build is required; thus, picking the right choices to boost your DPS (damage per second) is better. Or we can have fun and do the challenges instead, which will boost your silver gains even more. Currently there are two biomes with three stages each, lots of heroes to play with, and a bazillion quests.

Audio & Graphics

This game should run on any toaster, as I’ve had no issues with the frames because of its old-school retro graphics. The soundtrack is super cool; I have listened to it all day and night long (if only it were available to download). Its UI is very recognizable from other games, with the experience bar going rainbow whenever we level up, and because it’s a wider open game in 3D, a simplistic minimap shows all the objects we can interact with. You better see it and hear it for yourself.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Another survivor game but with better visuals.

  • Open map filled with stuff to do.

  • Epic soundtrack!

  • A skeleton on a skateboard!

  • A monke with shades!

Cons

  • Does it get repetitive? Maybe once you unlock everything.

  • A bit tad difficult. (scalable by you)

Rating: 9/10

I suck at this game, but it changed my life.
