Monster Lab Simulator

Updated: Apr 24

Overview

You have earned a job creating monsters, or well, more like cute pets called Fulus, to please whoever is watching you. In Monster Lab you’ll hatch all dozens of pets from eggs, to either sell them, merge them into improved breeds, or participate in battles with other pets for loot and bragging rights. As you progress in the lab more equipment will become available, and you can hatch more breeds from the elemental plane of your choice. Gotta hatch them all!

Gameplay

You start within the main storage area where most of the science happens. Several machines are already placed, and you just started the day by buying the missing equipment. To create a breed you need two steps: Buy a common egg, then place it in the essence machine. From there, pick three of the same or random essences to choose what you want to hatch. Then it’s hatching time, which takes one real-life minute. From there, it is either leaving the Fulu to wander aimlessly in the lab or packaging it into an orb to be used for battle or selling. You can always change your mind and depackage the pet in the same machine by pulling the lever up.

To unlock more of the lab equipment and consumables for your pets, leveling up is done by completing the tutorial and the daily tasks later or discovering new breeds. Only common eggs can be bought from the store at any time. Rarer eggs can be obtained from the slot machine, but breaking down amber is the common way (up to five per day). Essences are used to tell the egg what breed you want. Every Fulu has their own stats and abilities they will use in battle, with better stats and more abilities the rarer the Fulu is. There is RNG in some rewards, in the bingo slot machine for example, but if you were to merge two epics and one rare, there is the chance of getting either an epic or a legendary.

And where is the fun if you can’t play with your pets? Currently the only way to do so is doing battles with them. Choose your best three Fulus and observe how they trash their opponents (or trash yours). After each battle pets will retain their lost health, that’s why habitats exist, which will restore the lost health gradually. Snacks and consumables grant boosts to pets in battle and must manually feed them in the battle room. All battles always grant the same rewards, you can reroll your opponents with a few coins.

There isn’t much to do currently other than hatch all the possible combinations at their rarest quality. At the shop you can buy shelves to place your inventory of usable items and even more machines once your level is high enough. You also have two tools in the lab: In case one of your pets catches fire, a fire extinguisher is located in the first room, as well as a plunger gun to grab unnailed items at a distance (including Fulus). The roadmap for future updates includes dressing up your pets and new species of Fulus. You can attempt to collect every pet and try to earn the current set of Steam achievements.

Audio & Graphics

It’s cute to hear the monsters squeak when you scoop them up or during the battles as they claw against each other. There is no music played automatically in the lab; you have a radio that features their tunes manually. Graphics are a weird bunch, at least their configuration, because I’ve had no issues with performance (except when a lot of particles are in play, such as when using the fire extinguisher). The only problem so far is in setting a resolution, as it did not take my 1920x1080 in any option. Also you can’t rebind keys, which might be troublesome for some.

Pros & Cons

Pros-

  • Cozy casual simulation game: play to be a “mad scientist” of Pokémons.

  • Easy to play and adapt

Cons-

  • Becomes repetitive very early, but it has potential.

  • No key remapping.

  • Lack of content as of now (more coming soon).

Rating: 6/10

Remember: Offensive monsters win more battles than defensive ones.
