Introduction
Mystery of Myths: Whisper of Depth is a hidden-object game (HOG), developed and published by Do Games Limited. When I first saw it, I immediately thought it was another Artifex Mundi game. Sadly, that was not the case. However, I wanted to give it a try as I love these types of games and usually enjoy them.
It seemed to use AI due to the sheer number of games they release and several visual styles present in the game itself. Even still, I decided to play it out and see if it’s worth it. The game has 4 chapters and follows a story about a detective in a mythical underwater kingdom.
Gameplay
In most of these HOGs, gameplay consists of locating where the mini-game is and then playing it to find more objects and/or clues to proceed with the story. These mini-games consist of scenes where you locate hidden objects (which further vary depending on whether you are given text-based clues, item names, pictures, etc.), solve puzzles (rotating wheels, finding patterns, and many more), or simply combine provided objects to make new ones.
Mystery of MythsL Whisper of Depth sadly fails in most of these aspects. The story being told leaps from point A to point B without much thought. Different characters appear out of nowhere, are there for a couple of panels, then leave. The “Mythical” aspect is interesting, but even then, it is not told in a good way.
Some of the wording is complex for no reason, and the clues have way too much text for my liking. Not to say these aren’t good, just some of it seems pointless. It could have been compacted in a way that would suit the player more.
The mini-games themselves (for me) required trial and error to understand what was needed. And even then, when there were multiple parts to be done, all had to be done at once. What do I mean by that? In the picture provided, the button triggers all 4 tracks. If even one is incorrect, they ALL go back to their starting positions, so you can’t tweak; you have to memorize the exact number of turns for all of them separately.
Positives
Mythical underwater city
HOG mini-games are fun
Achievements
Negatives
Wording in mini-games is bad
Needs DLC for best dialogue choices
No punishment for mass clicking
The story is all over the place
Video, Audio & Sound
The game has several art styles implemented. While other HOGs do it as well, mostly to display how the world segments move around, this game uses it for silly stuff like the score counter, which completely takes the player out of the story. It’s very shiny and pointless.
The text is read-only; there are no voice actors.
Sounds are decent; you can confirm you found an item with sound as well. In other mini-games, metal sounds metallic, screwdriver sounds as it should, just to name a few.
Personal Thoughts
I struggled from the start to the very end. In fact, some of the final puzzles were pretty specific (you needed to know the rules of checkers to complete one of them, for example). Other than that and some ridiculous ideas to solve some (like using a baseball bat to reach an object out of reach), I had fun. Luckily, the hint/skip puzzle button recharges fairly quickly, so I could save myself from suffering.
The very thought of locking out content through DLC is astonishing to me. I could understand having additional content as a DLC (which I do not approve of either), but base game options are not something I think should happen, ever.
Conclusion
If you are a fan of HOGs, you might want to give this a try. There were no bugs in my playthrough. If you are a fan of Artifex Mundi games, you might be disappointed at the quality of this one. And, if you are a newbie when it comes to HOG, I recommend skipping it entirely, as it might create an aversion to a fun genre.
