What is Pumpkin Hop about?

Pumpkin Hop is, as the name suggests, a game where you control a pumpkin hopping around, trying to reach the top of the pole. While it sounds simple and it is, the variety comes with certain power-ups and platforms with abilities.

Positives and Negatives

The Good

  • Fun in short bursts. A level here and there can be exciting.

  • Pumpkin can wear different hats. You have to unlock them first.

  • Three lives per run. They do not refresh between levels.

The Bad

  • Number one thing: the controls. You have to keep the mouse click pressed as you rotate the scene, which can be very taxing on the hand over longer periods of time.

  • Extremely unprecise death planes that don’t even feel (or are) consistent. Drop 2 floors? Instant death, and yet I have managed to fall so low that I am barely on the screen and still be alive.

Gets boring fast. The longer you play, the more boring it gets as it’s just more of the same, but longer.

It’s a ripoff of a mobile game (or maybe even a port) because the actual game is in the middle 1/3rd of the screen. Like a mobile game would look.

Visuals and Audio

The game looks bland, like someone’s first attempt at a game in Blender. And for an indie game of this caliber, it works. You will not be amazed, but it’s not bad.

Audio and sounds are there. They exist, every jump has a sound, the menu has music… That’s about everything you can say about it. Nothing you will remember as soon as you exit the game.

Summary

It’s one of those games that’s on the edge of asset flipping and a beginner’s attempt at a video game. If you enjoy mindlessly playing or some mouse control practice, check this game out.
