Overview
Save Your Soul is an arcade platformer where you must guide your soul across different levels without losing your wings. The game falls under the souls-like category; you only have one attempt to complete a level, and they are very difficult.
Gameplay
You control a soul with wings attached that can help rotate the soul and fly towards its destination. There’s no flying upwards or downwards; you must gain momentum and impulse by flapping both wings at the same time towards the desired direction. The only problem is that you are very fragile; as soon as the wings collide with the walls or other hazards, you lose them. You can hide your wings to avoid the collision, but it will not help as a brake.
As if it wasn’t bad enough, the levels are unique in that you must navigate them without ever crashing into spikes, skulls, rotating saws, or even the walls. You must be extremely precise to squeeze through the narrow walls and avoid the traps altogether. Some instances must be resolved within a small fragment of time; the turrets and saws will not wait for you.
Visuals & Audio
There’s only music in the main menu, fitting the game’s scenery. The wings make its sound whilst flipping, as well as the turrets giving both an audio and visual cue.
The entire game is black and white, with the soul, the traps, and the exit’s vortex being white enough to give them importance; the walls and all the world itself are completely dark, but the route you must take is clearly visible.
Pros and Cons
Pros
Only one mechanic.
Easy to play, hard to master.
Simple graphics and sounds.
It feels rewarding to beat a level.
Cons
Souls-like. Very difficult.
No key remapping. (Wish I could use the arrows instead of A and D; it's more precise this way.)
Rating: 6/10
How hard could it be? *30 minutes later* Well that was level 4.
