Introduction

Shuffled Sky is a unique mix of turn-based combat and a deck-building roguelike with MMO-type exploration in a cute pixel art style. You can create a party of adventures to explore given areas, use cards in the world map to create new routes and find secrets, as well as fight powerful adversaries on your route to defeat the elementals.

Gameplay

Gameplay consists of 2 separate segments. One is combat and the other is exploration (mmo maker style).

Combat is a turn-based event played on a 6x6 grid. You have your classic movement, attacks, spells, but where this game shines is that you can use cards to modify and improve those actions. For example, by using a light card on an attack, it becomes a Semite, increasing the damage it does and making it sound way cooler. All party members share the same cards, but everyone has unique combos, so you are free to mix and match and find what best suits your style.

Exploration, as I called it, has a multi-layered aspect to it. The first one is the selected level, like the main hub; the second one is the actual level before you reach the boss. You can move freely in these areas, attack random objects, and use cards to try and create new paths. Another example, you see an unreachable island. Simply toss one of the earth cards on the river and create a way to it!

There are 6 basic and 15 combined elements currently in the game, so try to find them all and see what their best uses are.

Customization

I already mentioned that you can customize attacks and abilities with cards, but you can also customize the characters. Starting with the level up mechanics, you get points you can use to level up stats. It’s up to you what you want to do. More mana for the wizards — you got it, hp and armor for the tank? No problem. Thinking ahead, recruiting heroes you want and optimally raising their stats is the key to successfully defeating the elementals.

As a cherry on top, you can further differentiate between your characters/classes by altering their garments, color palette, and even gender. There are basically no limits to getting the run you want!

Positives

  • New card mechanics

  • Explorability

  • 2 Campaigns to try out (more to be available soon)

  • Can pick up a run at any time

Negatives

  • Needs a better database of collected/seen items

  • Some bugs (I got soft-locked twice)

  • Pixel art might not be for everyone

Video, Audio & Sound

Not much to talk about here, the pixel art is good. Some people dislike it, others love it, but I think it's decent no matter how you look at it. Every attack has a sound, they work nicely. The music in the background is soothing and fits the narrative very well.

Personal thoughts

I had fun playing the game, most combats were trivial and bosses were good. Slightly overwhelming with the amount of cards you can get, but overall it was a good experience. When I got soft locked, the devs patched the game in about a week. Overall, it was a pleasant experience for me.

Conclusion

Shuffled Sky is a great game for those who enjoy turn-based combat and want to try something new and unusual. It has only 2 campaigns at the moment, but the potential is there for a great game. Some minor bugs but the devs are actively working on them. Give it a try, you might be surprised. A recommended 6/10 from me.
