Squarepinski (DEMO)

Updated: 1 day ago

(A copy of the full game was played, however it’s the demo version.)

Overview

Squarepinski is a puzzler game with a simpler design and colorful graphics. It features its own customized mechanics that you can try with or without. There is no timer here; you can either challenge yourself by adjusting these mechanics or play it easier at your own pace. You may add your own custom images and play those using the game’s mechanics.

Gameplay

This is a puzzle game, and it’s played like so. You place puzzle pieces into the board until it’s complete and in the correct position. You can select how many pieces the game will split the painting/artwork, up to 30.

The mechanics used are simple: Any puzzle piece can be rotated clockwise or counterclockwise; they can also be of any size, and thus you can enlarge or shrink them. The unique feature of the game is that the puzzle pieces can be flipped. All the pieces will start in a random rotation and/or orientation outside of the board. With all these mechanics, you must complete the artwork, placing them in the right place. Hints can be requested without penalties; you can also check the full picture by holding down the space bar.

At the options menu you can adjust how complicated the game can be. You can disable the outlines in the board, which appear randomly and will help you place the pieces correctly, lock them into place if they are in the right position, or toggle the flip mechanic. Finally, you can set the location of the board on the screen; if it is in the middle, the pieces will be equally distributed on both sides.

You can check how well you are doing with an artwork by looking at the number of stars in the level selection. If you completed a puzzle with lots of pieces, it will grant you all the stars possible. There is only one set of artworks of the game; the rest will become available later. The other ones are from the developers' mascots. You may play with a random custom image of your choosing using the game’s mechanics.

Audio & Graphics

The artworks speak for themselves; these hand drawings add to the game's charm and challenge. The interface is colorful but simple; there’s a light & dark mode to toggle that changes the mood accordingly. Not much to say about the music; it’s a tranquil piano note for a relaxing experience. The game’s sound effects are a bit louder than normal.
