Look, I play PGA when I want my golf itch. But Super Video Golf? This one snuck up on me. Turns out stripped-down retro golf hits different when you just want to chill.

📝Story/Plot without spoilers

🔸No story here - and that's fine. You're a golfer. You golf. Career mode has you climbing through leagues and tournaments across 12 courses, but there's no dramatic narrative about redeeming your father's legacy or whatever. Just you, your clubs, and the green. Sometimes that's all you need.

🎮Gameplay

🔸Here's the thing - Super Video Golf nails what matters. The Swingput system lets you use a controller thumbstick or mouse motion for your swing, and the power bar actually reflects what you're doing. It feels natural. Or you can use the spacebar to swing with a quick time event.

------🔹Ball spin, wind conditions, club selection - it's all here. The range indicator on the minimap accounts for terrain elevation and wind in real-time, so you're not guessing where your shot lands. Putt assist gives you visual feedback on distance. These are quality-of-life features that bigger golf games sometimes forget.

------🔹Courses come in three flavors, each one playable in different weather and lighting conditions. Want to golf at night in the rain? Kinda weird, but go for it. Plus you also have a driving range, clubhouse, course remixer and ability to upgrade the stats of the clubs. So there’s plenty of content. The game literally has 133 achievements!

🔸Difficulty scaling works well. Casual clubs for when you want to zone out and just hit some shots without worrying about the CPU opponents. Regular adds distance to your clubs but also introduces more chances of hooking or slicing the shot. Pro clubs when you want to actually think. The clubs can be upgraded, they go longer distances and are more prone to messing up. Higher risk, higher reward! The career mode with its 6 leagues gives you something to grind toward, and monthly leaderboards keep things fresh.

🔸Multiplayer is where this game should shine. Up to 8 local players, 8 online, or a mix of 16 total. Couch co-op golf sounds great in theory. Problem? The playerbase is tiny. Finding an online match is rough. You'll pretty much need friends who own this, or you're playing solo with CPU opponents. Not the game's fault really - it's just criminally underplayed.

📷 Graphics

🔸Retro 90s style. Deliberately low-fi, and it works for what it is. Won't blow anyone's mind, but it's got charm. Runs on basically anything - Steam Deck verified, scales from 640x480 to UHD ultrawide. The aesthetic is consistent and clean, just don't expect 'EA Sports' production values.

📝Main Pros and Cons

🟩Pros-

  • Relaxing golf game

  • Real-time wind and elevation indicators - no guesswork

  • Tons of content for the price (12 courses, career, Workshop)

  • Steam Deck verified, runs on potato hardware

  • Devs actively updating the game

  • Variable difficulty suits casual and serious players

🟥Cons-

  • Multiplayer playerbase is nearly dead

  • Swing animation lacks variation (full swing everywhere)

🏷️Tips For Beginners

🔸Start with Casual clubs to learn the courses. The real-time range indicator is your best friend - use it. Pay attention to wind direction before every shot, it matters more than you'd think. For putting, the assist feature shows distance feedback, so enable that from settings until you've got a feel for the greens. In the start you won’t have full club set, so keep the distances in mind.

😇 Verdict

🔸Super Video Golf is a hidden gem for golf fans who want simulation without the bloat. No weird powerups, no arcade nonsense - just proper golf with retro charm. If you're looking for couch co-op golf or solo relaxation, this delivers. The dead multiplayer scene is a shame, but that's a playerbase problem, not a game problem. For this price? Easy recommendation. Grab some friends, grab some controllers, and tee off.

Who knew 90s golf could be this chill? My backlog can wait.
