🎮 Gameplay Mechanics

🔶 The horror genre is one of the best ways to have fun with friends, whether it’s through movies or games. All you really need is a good horror game and friends who aren’t afraid to mess around and make things even scarier. One such game is Devour, which mixes horror with gameplay that leads to a lot of fun moments. 🔷 The story revolves around members of a cult who get possessed by a demon named Azazel, whose goal is to take control of people and cause chaos. Each level is set in a different location, like a farmhouse or a slaughterhouse, where one cult member is possessed and the others try to stop the demon. The first level takes place in the farmhouse, which belongs to the cult leader Anna. She successfully summons Azazel but fails to control it, leading to her possession. To save her, you must perform a ritual by burning goats at a ritual site.

🔶 The challenge comes from the setup. The goats are scattered around the house, and a possessed Anna roams the area, ready to attack you. To burn the goats, you need fuel in the form of gas cans, which are also scattered around. Since you can only carry one item at a time, you’ll need to make multiple trips between the house and the ritual area. You have to repeat this process ten times to complete the level, and with each ritual, the demon becomes faster and more aggressive.

🔷 Other levels follow the same core gameplay but change the setting, the possessed character, and the type of items you need. Each map feels unique and is well designed. My personal favorite was The Inn- it’s a great map, though it was quite challenging on the first run. The game also includes perks that you can enable before starting a run to make things easier.

🔶However, the game isn’t all candles. While the difficulty increases as the demon gets stronger, the main objective stays the same throughout. It’s definitely fun to play a few rounds with friends, but it doesn’t quite have the same long-term appeal as other games in the genre like Phasmophobia which has a lot of variety in the horror elements.

📷 Visuals and Audio

🔷 Of course, the game has the usual dark and eerie atmosphere you would expect from a horror game, and to be quite honest, there’s nothing unique or new about the visuals. That said, the environments still feel polished and well put together. What I really liked are the differently levels- each one has its own theme, and the developers have done a great job bringing those settings to life. As for the audio, it’s definitely a job well done. The ghost’s cries and unsettling sounds add a lot to the tension, especially in the level with the widow. Overall, the sound design enhances the horror experience.

📝Main Pros and Cons

Pros-

  • Great horror environment with differently themed levels.

  • Level-design is peak.

  • Co-op is quite fun.

  • Interesting lore elements.

  • Gameplay feels intense throughout the entire run.

Cons-

  • May get repetitive after a while.

  • Some levels are a bit too hard.

😇 Honest Rating

🔶 Devour focuses more on co-op gameplay than pure horror. While the tension stays high throughout each level, there isn’t much that truly scares you. Still, that doesn’t take away from the fun- it’s definitely a great game to play with friends. I’d recommend picking it up, preferably during a sale.
