Overview
In Enchanted Broom you control a witch, and you must beat several platforming levels using a broom to fly across gaps and other traps without falling off the level itself. It is a short, unpolished platformer that offers little content, but the execution is fine, though some levels were a bit tedious. You can also hop into a racing vehicle, which is neat.
Gameplay
Starting in the witch’s house, you can first check the wardrobe and change the colors of your clothes and add a witch’s hat. There are four portals that must be unlocked with coins; these are earned scattered through the level and by smashing pots. The only purpose of having coins is to unlock the other portals in the living room.
There are only three biomes to explore: a desert, a construction area, and a castle, with the last portal containing other biomes like a forest, mountains, and space. Every level has its own platforms, enemies, and traps. We can double jump, mantle over gaps, and wall jump to traverse the level. There are some buttons that can only be pressed by smashing the ground while airborne. Levels also have checkpoints in case we fall through the scenario.
Our witch can use her broom to fly for a limited time until we run out of juice, which replenishes over time. She can also attack enemies and smash pots with it. The wild animals pose no threat, and they can be knocked out with a single broom spin. We only have three lives; if we lose all of them due to traps, enemies, or falling, we will respawn at the last checkpoint. We can also drive with a racing vehicle instead of using our broom.
To finish a level, we must reach a red and white circle far away from the starting point. It usually presents a series of platforms and gaps, traps that move along those platforms (flamethrowers) or spikes, without falling off. You can check how fast you completed a level back at the level selection menu. Some levels can be tedious or challenging; for example, the second level of the desert biome tasks us to move a box across a maze, which took me five minutes to push very slowly due to physics. Coins have no use other than to unlock the other portals, so there is no reason to collect them in future levels.
Bugs Found
Levels have generic names (probably intentional).
In a level of the construction biome, I started near the last checkpoint of the level instead of the starting area.
In a level of the castle where you have to swim, I couldn’t complete the level, as the game got stuck when reaching the goal, so I had to close the game.
Audio & Graphics
The music was good, but it was only one track in all levels. Graphics were decent, and the game performed just fine. I left it without changing anything and the frames didn’t drop on any level.
Pros & Cons
Pros
Cute platformer that captures other games well.
Decent gameplay, if a bit tedious.
Cons
Feels very short; capable of beating it in under one or two hours.
Some levels were tedious to complete.
Several errors are still present.
Rating: 6/10
Why fly when you can drive?
