GeoGuessr Steam Edition

Story - Content

Experience GeoGuessr: Steam Edition, a short and surprisingly frustrating re-release of the web-based classic that once had me guessing places better than my actual hometown.

You play as... well, yourself - dropped somewhere on Earth, trying to guess where the hell you are based on roadsigns, trees, or whether the people drive on the left. But instead of the freedom you once had on the website, the Steam version asks: “Hey, wanna give us some money?”

There isn’t really a story, just the creeping realization that the developers locked content behind paywalls that were previously open. But the thrill of being wrong in six continents is still there… sort of.

On the website, anyone can easily play the free daily challenge - you just log in with your own account. But in the Steam version, you're stuck with one GeoGuessr account only. There's no option to log out or switch users. So if your friend or sibling wants to play on their own profile, they can't - unless you reinstall the whole game. One profile only, no exceptions.

Visuals & Audio

Visuals

The visuals are as you'd expect - it’s Google Street View. So basically the same level of visual fidelity as the free version you can play right now on their website. But hey, it is in full screen now, and that does make it feel like a premium experience... right?

Audio

Still no soundtrack, no ambient noise, not even a little clicky-clack when you move around. But hey, if you love hearing the sound of disappointment when you realize this is more of a subscription launcher than a game, your speakers will love it.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Same addictive gameplay loop as the web version

  • Steam Deck compatible

  • Full-screen mode (seriously, that’s a win)

  • Can trick yourself into thinking you're exploring the world

  • No ads or interruptions

  • Can replay free version (10 Lowest Division games, often against bots)

Cons

  • Subscription still required for full content

  • One profile per Steam account

  • Limited features vs. the web version

  • Website is literally better - and often free

  • Website Pro sub doesn't link with Steam login.

Final Thoughts

If you loved the web version, this might feel familiar at first… and then disappointing when you realize it offers less than what’s still free online.

Would I recommend it? Only if you’re allergic to browsers.

Rating: 4/10

Still better at geography than me, but not better than their own website.
