🎮 Gameplay Mechanics
🔶 My expectations going into this game were pretty low, mainly because a survival game with a boundary-less level doesn’t sound very unique. However, Incursion proved me wrong. It turned out to be a refreshing experience and delivers exactly what you’d expect from a roguelite survival shooter. To complete a level, you simply need to survive for a fixed amount of time based on the difficulty you choose, all while waves of enemies swarm you. The game starts off slow, but as time goes on, the screen fills with so much chaos that you’ll sometimes struggle to even see your crosshair.
🔷 The progression in this game feels very rewarding because it includes both permanent upgrades and temporary upgrades earned during each run. Here’s how it works- you start by choosing a class, which decides your character’s starting abilities. There are six classes in total, and each one feels different thanks to its unique secondary ability. My personal favorite was the shock class, which has a special ability called Chain Lightning that can electrocute an entire group of enemies at once. As time passes, the difficulty increases rapidly, so each run has its own levelling system. Enemies drop experience, which fills up your level bar. Every time you level up, a menu appears with three upgrade choices. These usually include improvements to your main weapon, secondary abilities, or your health and movement. This system keeps things interesting because you can’t just stay in one place- you have to move around and collect experience, or you’ll die very quickly.
🔶There’s also a “Threat” bar that shows how many enemies are currently on the map. If you keep running away without killing them, the threat level rises too high, and that will end your run. Another thing I really liked about this game is the variety of enemies. You’ll face bugs that shoot lasers, bees that rush toward you at high speed and explode, and most importantly, boss fights that appear every five minutes. The game has three difficulty modes- Basic, Advanced, and Elite- across three different levels. The Basic difficulty feels well balanced, and you can usually clear a level in one or two tries. Advanced, on the other hand, is much harder. Dying in the final minute is extremely painful, and that happened to me more times than I’d like to admit. As for Elite… it’s pure chaos, so I won’t even get into that.
🔷Overall, my impression of the game’s progression and combat is very positive. Even though your weapon fires automatically, you still need precise movement and good positioning to survive. Mixing different abilities and rushing into enemy groups to grab experience and health made the gameplay intense and genuinely fun.
🔶As mentioned earlier, the game also includes permanent upgrades that you can access from the main menu using currency earned during your runs. This currency drops from enemies, is scattered around the map, and is also rewarded based on how long you survive and the difficulty you play on. You can use it to improve your character’s skills or upgrade abilities to higher tiers. Because of this, even a failed run still feels somewhat rewarding.
🔷Another great feature is how Steam achievements actually give you in-game rewards. Completing achievements unlocks new classes or abilities, many of which are locked at the start. I honestly wish more games used achievements this way!
📷 Visuals and Audio
🔷 There aren’t many visual elements in the game because of its genre, but the animations and UI still look decent. My only real complaint is with the third level, which has a green floor that isn’t pleasant to look at. When you combine that with the Acid class, it becomes worse- you end up seeing green bullets, green movement trails, green enemies, all on a green floor. It just feels overwhelming and hard on the eyes. That said, the soundtrack fits the game’s vibe well and does a good job of enhancing the chaotic feel of the action.
📝Main Pros and Cons
Pros-
Chaotic yet fun gameplay.
Rewarding progression.
Different classes and abilities available.
Decent difficulty curve.
Levelling system and permanent upgrades available.
Cons-
Some visual elements could be better.
Ability upgrades need to be redesigned as right now, if you upgrade an ability, you will most likely end up using it for the rest of the game without trying out a new one.
😇 Honest Rating
🔶 It’s always nice to see small indie developers making games that are genuinely fun to play. Since this is a pre-release review, I don’t know what the final price will be, so my rating is based only on the gameplay experience. As long as the game is priced reasonably, I would definitely recommend it.
Rating: 8/10
I hate everything that flies in this game.
