She's Leaving

Updated: 4 days ago

Overview

She’s Leaving is a first-person adventure that features forensic investigation and hide-and-seek with an enemy that’s lurking within the house. Armed with a taser and a camera, we must shed light on what happened to its owner. Because we are definitely not alone, we must run and hide from our stalker to survive. Having elements that remind us of Resident Evil and Condemned, this adventure is a very good choice despite some flaws in its story.

Story

Charlie is a forensic detective policeman that has currently accepted an invitation to investigate the abandoned, now turned into an attraction, Haywood Manor. Her ladyship has been reported missing, with claims that she may or may not have ever left her home. Entering the outskirts of the manor, he can witness relics and monuments of a past era. Upon unlocking the front gate and entering the forgotten house, he quickly realizes he’s not alone…

Gameplay

The first chapter takes us to the outskirts of the residence, now a forgotten land. We cannot use our tools yet, and there is no real danger. This chapter is only a brief introduction to the game’s lore. Your task is to find the key to unlock the front gate of the manor’s entrance. Once inside, the real game begins.

You are equipped with a taser and a camera, both for solving puzzles and the former for self-defense. The taser can only hold one charge of electrical shot before it needs to be reloaded. It also includes an ultraviolet flashlight, which is used to find blood prints hidden in certain areas. Our camera is used with a tripod to take better pictures, and then we analyze those from our deduction. In certain rooms of the manor it will also be used to save our game.

Once any blood prints have been found, we must choose what type of blood it is and how the blood ended up on the wall, whether it was cast off or a flow or contact pattern. Failing to choose the correct answer will affect our character severely with brain fog, reducing our movement speed and making us an easy target for the stalker that inhabits the rooms of the manor. Our taser can be used to stun them briefly if we have extra cartridges or overcharge power switch boxes to unlock electric locked doors. Because these cartridges are limited and few are scattered, we must exert extreme caution. Avoiding getting spotted (never run, walk) will save us lots of ammo.

Being a maze of a manor, there are a few maps placed on display, but we can't take them for convenience, and we must memorize where we are going. A lot of the doors are locked, which means a lot of keys must be found, either inside a safe or a locked door even. Don’t forget you can always read the notes you’ve found again in your inventory. If you have any unused keys, find the correct door with the use of a map. Just remember that the stalker is walking within the halls, and if you’re spotted, taser and run.

Bugs Found

  • A lot of the props, walls, and the like here are under low graphical quality and blurred. It seems it's irrelevant to any graphic setting. If the page document that is held when we are analyzing a blood print is intended to be readable, then it’s blurred, and nothing can be made out of it.

  • When save scumming (reloading after choosing the wrong answer), sometimes the walkie-talkie icon is being displayed, and you cannot interact with anything because it doesn’t go away. Reloading the same game again will fix it.

Audio & Graphics

The soundtrack truly captures the essence of the classic Resident Evil games. The atmosphere is so quiet inside that you can only hear the clock’s ticking (which it seems is connected to your operative system’s clock) and the enemy’s footsteps. Despite the materials being rendered in low graphical quality, it didn’t bother me a lot.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • An action adventure that can be matched with the classics.

  • Good rewarding puzzles.

  • Great soundtrack.

Cons

  • Blurred low quality graphics in a lot of areas.

  • The stalker is not very threatening if I go stealth all the time.

Rating: 7/10

Sadly, we are not Leon.
